The Moorings Hotel in Motherwell is a family run 3 star hotel and restaurant providing quality accommodation and great food all at affordable prices.

History

The Moorings Hotel was originally was built as a family home during the 1880’s by Archibald Colville son of David Colville Snr., founder of Colville Iron and Steel Works Co.

The Census of 1891 shows the house was occupied by Archibald, wife Jeannie and their two children as well as the live-in servants. The house was constructed to a palatial standard, with many external stone carvings, elegant windows, beautiful oak panelling and staircases, delightful cornices and brass light fittings. Sadly some of these features have been lost in the interest of progress!

From 1925 to 1971 the house was owned by the Ormiston family. Thomas Ormiston was the local MP from 1931-1935. His grand daughter, Linda Ormiston, is now an internationally renowned opera star.

In 1971 the house was converted to be the local Boys Brigade Headquarters and subsequently became a hotel in 1987. The current owner has sympathetically upgraded and extended the building to provide a chic modern hotel in stylish surroundings.

As an owner operated hotel we are proud to have a VisitScotland 3 star award.

Staff

General Manager – Iain Templeton

Iain has many years experience working in the hotel industry, too many to admit in writing! Since leaving Scottish and Newcastle to first join the Garfield Hotel group in 1986 he has managed the Crutherland Hotel, East Kilbride, The Best Western Garfield Hotel, Stepps and The Best Western Park Hotel in Falkirk before moving to The Moorings Hotel in March 2009.

Head Chef - Evan Welsh

Evan has worked as a chef for 25 years,18 as a head chef. He has worked in many hotels and restaurants around Scotland and Europe including the award winning Fairways Restaurant in The Marine Highland Hotel in Troon and latterly as head chef at Cafe Mao in Glasgow.

He joined us at The Moorings a year ago and along with Sous Chef Chris McNeil heads our team of enthusiatic young chefs.

Susan and Lorraine head the office team in reception and reservations.

Bruno and Barry lead the service team and look after the bar, restaurant and functions. They epitomise the phrase “blend of experience and youthful exuberance”! It will be obvious to you all who offers which!

Talking of ‘cheeky chappies’ Mary heads the housekeeping team who ensure the rooms are kept spic ‘n span!

Then for a smile at breakfast time meet Elaine! A reason to visit in itself!
